Many people are living with some form of long-term emotional pain caused by traumatic events from the past. These events could have been unforeseen – a tragic accident perhaps – or the effects of a dysfunctional relationship. Whatever has caused the emotional state of our mind, we do our best to cope and deal with it. We might go for some reasonably long stretches of time when we feel okay and believe that we’ve managed to lay our problems to rest, until they begin to surface again further down the line. It can often seem easier just to abandon ourselves to this suffering and accept it as a part of our lives. However, the emotional and physical cost of all this pain is extremely high.
Here is an excerpt from the book Kintsugi: Embrace your imperfections and find happiness – the Japanese way by Tomas Navarro (available from Amazon). It suggests an exercise in dealing with emotional pain.
“I encourage you to compensate for that pain by enriching your life, seeking out new things to look forward to and new activities that generate positive emotions. Try to imagine the pain, whether it is physical or emotional, as a payment from your bank account. Every day, every week or every month, your pain withdraws a specific amount of well-being from your bank account, inevitable, always at the specified time. But if you are capable of paying well-being into your account, it will never go into overdraft and the quantity of well-being that has been withdrawn by pain will not throw your daily life off balance, or in any case, you will be able to redress the balance.”
Sometimes it can seem difficult to face up to taking on new things and/or forming new friendships, but if we make the effort we just might become stronger as each day passes and our achievements, however small, will add up and encourage us.
You deserve to enjoy life now, no matter what has happened in the past. You are so fortunate to have been given this life so make the most of each and every day. As a well-known television advert tells us – You are worth it!
